Hollis Brown Band
Saturday, July 11
9:00pm
$7

With a distinct sound uniting hook-soaked pop and blues-drenched rock 'n roll, Hollis Brown is a throwback to an era when music felt fresh, songwriting was revered, and performances routinely inspired. For their self-titled, debut album, the band teamed up with music producer Jamie Sigel, known for his work behind the boards with Lauryn Hill on her Grammy-winning LP. What resulted is a diverse and exciting collection of well-crafted rock songs with pop sensibility. From radio-friendly hits like lead single "Passin' Me By" and "Completed Fool" to southern-tinged grooves such as "Carolina, Carolina" and "Til the Morning", the album features quality songwriting and crisp performances throughout. With the retail release date set for January 2009, the buzz around this band and its debut record is starting to turn heads.

Downtown Music Hall
Sunday, July 5
7:00 pm-11:00 pm
Capital Ale House will host an open musicians jam. There will be a house band to sit in with, as well as amps and drums provided for other groups to use. The host band consists of some very diverse and seasoned players. Will McIntyre on guitar who has been around the Richmond music and national music scene for years. Joining Will on drums is his brother Chris who is currently playing with Will in the Ray Pittman Project. Lastly on bass is Virginia native and nationally touring artist Chris Grigg.
All you need is a guitar or a pair of drumsticks, and at the end of the night, everyone who signs up on the list to jam will be in a drawing for a $20 gift certificate from Capital Ale House. Whether you play jazz, rock, country, or the blues this jam will have something for you.

It’s not every day that a relatively unknown artist is recognized by the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In 2006, the Lennon award was given to the Brooklyn, NY-based Chris Ayer in the folk category. The impression left by this achievement has opened many doors for the singer/songwriter whose song “Evaporate” from his self-released full-length, This Is The Place (2006), was given that particular honor. Yet to pigeonhole this talented musician as a folkie would be way off base. Elements of pop, rock, country and even jazz permeate Chris Ayer’s sound.

John Brown's Body

Passafire
Friday, July 31

$15 adv $17 day of show

John Brown's Body is an eight-person modern reggae group. The group has released six studio albums and toured across the U.S. for ten years. Originally more deep-rooted in the more traditional roots and foundation stylings of Reggae that helped to build their reputation as a serious act, their music (starting from 2003) began to take a direction toward a more modern, spaced-out sound with an occasional blend of the traditional. As such, their music has been described by the New York Daily News as "more Massive Attack than Marley", and "reverent and revolutionary at the same time", a nod to their futuristic take on reggae music and their ability to put a unique twist on this music.
The group has been called "America's best and most original reggae band" , and continues to play almost exclusively original material. They have performed with a variety of groups, representing a wide-range of genres, over the years. This includes well known acts such as: Dave Matthews Band, Ozomatli, Broken Social Scene, and Jurassic 5. They have also headlined tours across the nation at the theater level.

Dar Williams
with Stephen Kellogg
Thursday, August 13
9:00pm
$25 adv $30 day of show

Williams' growth as a person over her 15-year career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist. Raised in Chappaqua, NY, and educated at Wesleyan University, Williams spent 10 years living in the thriving artistic community of Northampton, MA, where she began to make the rounds on the coffeehouse circuit. An early fan of her music was Joan Baez, who took Williams out on the road and recorded several of her songs. Williams self-released her debut album, The Honesty Room in 1993, then signed with Razor & Tie Entertainment in 1995, which has been her label home ever since. She has released one live album — Out There Live (2001); six studio albums — The Honesty Room (1993), Mortal City (1996), End of the Summer (1997), The Green World (2000), The Beauty of the Rain (2003), and My Better Self (2005); and one live DVD — Live at Bearsville Theater (2007).
Through it all, Williams' motivation as an artist is to "experience meaning without fooling myself," she says. "There are these moments where everything feels connected, and I think my art is about trying to find the stories that make us feel connected. That's the verve of my life. It's what keeps things interesting."
